GSM gaining rapid grounds in India and many other parts of the world as an easy , intuitive and affordable mode of communication can be put to use in various other ways to benefit even utility companies .

Automated meter reading represents a vast opportunity. The vast fleets of vehicles and personnel now engaged in reading utility meters at homes, offices and factories can be replaced entirely by telemetry-equipped meters than phone in the readings automatically. Many utilities are already using telemetry for this purpose, and many more will adopt it as deregulation takes hold state by state and utilities are forced to face new competition.

The challenge for GSM operators lies in the fact that other wireless service providers, including a number of private wireless networks, have aggressively pursued this market opportunity. The good news is that the advantages of GSM, primarily its digital foundation and public network cost-effectiveness, apply particularly well in an application such as AMR.

Transformer Information Management System/Meter Information Management System (TIMS/MIMS)

TIMS/MIMS is a management information system, which captures and reports on the details of inventory, breakdown and repairs information of transformers and meters located all across Andhra Pradesh.

Similar to PMRS, TIMS/MIMS is an intranet-based tool for distributed capture and collation of transformer and meters related data for Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh. All the offices can access the web-based application present on the web server and database servers, physically located at Head quarters, using a browser over the VSAT network. Reports can be generated from the collated data in a dynamic manner enabling up to date inventory management and breakdown/repair management.

Unlike PMRS where data collection is periodic in nature, TIMS/MIMS captures all the transaction data related to indents, purchase, inventory, distribution, installation, breakdown and repair information about the transformers and meters as and when the data is available about any of the above mentioned events.

In addition, the system shows flag if performance falls below target. The system also permits generation of graphs and printing out of the reports/graphs. Thus, for effective generation of reports, there is need for data to be available in database for current year and previous year.

The system has various data collection, reporting and analysis features as mentioned below:

1. Drill Down reports
    The output values of the various parameters in a Drill down report can be drill down to its lowest level i.e. the     level at which the data was collected.

    For example: If the data for “A Transformer/ Meter” is being seen and analyzed, then it will show all the     historical, break down and repair details along with the different installation locations. Going another level down,     it will show all the details of Purchase Order and Quality Assurance checks conducted.

    This kind of drill down reporting is provided on reports of all parameters.

2. Quality Assurance and Vendor Rating Reports
    The various Quality Performance parameters and Vendor related data are collected at various office levels in the     company. A consolidated Quality Assurance and Vendor Rating reporting on these parameters is done for     analysis and auditing purpose.

3. Key Ratio reports
    Key ratio reports are the ratios of various performance parameter data collected through the system. Such     reports are very important for calculating various standard key ratios being used in the Power industry.

    Example: Hours of Service/ Hours of Breakdown.

4. Graphs
    The system also provides graphs on various parameters for comparing with reference to time or other     parameters themselves.

5. Printing of reports
    All the above-mentioned reports and Graphs for various parameters are provided with a facility of printing in PDF     format in order to maintain a proper security and to prevent manipulation.

Performance Management and Reporting System- PMRS

Performance management & Reporting System is an intranet-based tool for distributed capture and collation of vital performance data for Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh , India . All the offices at various levels can access the web-based application present on the web server and database servers, physically located at Head quarters, using a browser over the VSAT network. Reports can be generated from the collated data in a dynamic manner enabling up to date performance monitoring and management.

The performance data captured by PMRS is of aggregated nature over every calendar month. Thus data has to be entered at the various offices once every month. The system permits entry of data at offices such as Section (SO), Sub-Division (SDO), Division (DO) and Circle (CO). The data captured at each level of these office levels is mutually exclusive. Thus, for example, at section level, data related to Low Tension (LT) customers are captured while data related to High Tension (HT) are captured at the level of Divisional Office (DO). Apart from the Data Entry office levels, analysis reports are generated at DISCOM and HO level.

Based on the entered data, the system generates reports for the following:
 Performance for any month
 Corresponding performance for the same month, last year
 Target set for the chosen month
 Achievement till date for current year
 Target till date for current year
 Annual target for current year

In addition, the system shows flag if performance falls below target. The system also permits generation of graphs and printing out of the reports/graphs. Thus, for effective generation of reports, there is need for data to be available in database for current year and previous year.

    For example: If the data for “Power consumed for agricultural purpose” is collected in the lowest office in the     companies hierarchy, here Section Office, then if one is asking for a report on “Power Consumption” at DISCOM     - Distribution company level then the data output will be sum of that particular parameter over all the SO in that     Distribution Company. However if one wants to know the breakdown of this parameter values to its next lower     office level then by clicking of the parameter values will give the report for all the Circle offices under that     Distribution Company. Clicking on the output value of a particular Circle office will give the report for all Division     offices under that particular Circle office and so on. This report can be drilled down till Section Office level where     the data was entered into the system.

    This kind of drill down reporting is provided on reports of all parameter and at various office levels.

2. Multi Parameter reports
    The various performance parameters data is collected at various office levels in the company. A consolidated     multi parameter reporting on these parameters is done for analysis and auditing purpose.

3. Key Ratio reports
    Key ratio reports are the ratios of various performance parameter data collected through the system. Such     reports are very important for calculating various standard key ratios being used in the Power industry.

    Example: Income/Expenditure heads.

4. Graphs
    The system also provides graphs on various parameters for comparing with reference to time or other     parameters themselves.

5. Single parameter report
    These reports contain the target and actual values of a particular parameter and its comparison with last year's     values.

6. Printing of reports
    All the above-mentioned reports and Graphs for various parameters are provided with a facility of printing in PDF     format in order to maintain a proper security and to prevent manipulation.

7. Offline data integration
    Facility is provided for integrating data captured in off line mode where VSAT connectivity is not available. All the     validations available in on line module are incorporated with proper trace log facility.

8. Legacy system integration
    The system is also capable of communicating with existing legacy system, ERP systems , enabling the reports to     be based on information stored in both PMRS and legacy system.

A Critical performance parameter of the PMRS is fault tolerant data storage and fast database access. To ensure fault tolerance and high throughput, the database system is on a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) setup. This would also ensure that there is no loss of data even when one of the disks in the array becomes faulty, and can be replaced quickly with minimal down time. Apart from the hardware backup of the database using the RAID, the system also ensures automatic replication of data across the network.

The PMRS can in future become the base for other required data warehousing, data mining and DSS (Decision Support System) systems.
